Progressive music

Rock/Metal :

Day by day, the composing elements and styles of music has been evolving since either from a time of classics like Wolfgang Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven, from an era of pop icons Michael Jackson and Madonna and, rock icons Jimi Hendrix or Jim Morrison. This indents a point that the constant evolution of music never weakens out, or in other words, it would not be an understatement to say that the evolution of musical styles is

directly correlated to the passage of time. Within the different genres of music, rock music, originated in 1950s, has highly been categorized as the most influencing style of music for generations to follow. Metal music is one of the sub-genres of rock music, created by developing a thick, loud and massive sound which also has its extended branches to its different sub-genres.

Progressive Rock/Metal :

The term 'Progressive rock' or 'Progressive metal' ('prog') has, nowadays been widely used to define a genre of certain music. So, what is a prog music? The name itself is self-explanatory to some extent. Progressive means favoring process or accelerating or advancing. Every music in its own way could be a progressive music, but since we are focusing mainly on rock/metal music, there could be different properties for a song to be a progressive one. Firstly, a music with different variations in time signatures or odd time signatures, qualifies to be an intense prog music. The song structure with major timing variations stems out from the general songs which mostly are composed in 4/4 time signature. Conceptual ideas in lyrical contents of a song or in a whole album with complex instrumentation are the other properties of prog. Also, most of the prog songs are longer,

compared to the traditional verse/chorus songs. There are different bands worldwide which are strongly rooted to this genre of music, and are proved to be an inspiration for various after-coming other bands throughout the world.

In context of Nepal, different rock/metal bands have heavily been influenced by this genre of music and the bands playing them, worldwide. There were certain bands which do not exist anymore but are still remembered by their iconic compositions. Also, there are various bands evolving in the underground scene of Nepalese progressive music. Here, we talk about different international and national prog bands which are inspiring and aggrandizing the prog scene.
